The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update steps up on mixed reality

Microsoft’s next major Windows 10 release for 2017, the Fall Creators Update, doesn’t make any great noticable change. But you might have gathered that from its name alone. In many ways, it’s a continuation of what the company started with this spring’s Creators Update, which added Paint 3D, game mode and a slew of improvements focused on making things, be it art or a simple spreadsheet. (I’ve heard the word “creation” so many times this year from Microsoft reps, it’s beginning to sound like a cultish chant.)

With its latest OS, available today, Microsoft is preparing for the arrival of virtual-reality headsets. At the same time, it’s delivering some genuinely useful quality-of-life improvements for Windows 10 users.

Here are some of the new features:

  • The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes new features for developers and security upgrades.
  • Support for Microsoft-certified virtual-reality headsets.
  • Windows 10 can now relay Android phone notifications to your PC.
  • The Fall Creators Update utilizes Microsoft’s first use of its new design theme.
  • Windows 10 works better — and has new features for — stylus users.
  • Windows 10 is following in Snapchat’s and Facebook’s footsteps, adding augmented-reality stickers.
  • You can now pin contact information for your favorite people to the task bar.
  • A new feature frees up space by allowing you to store seldom-used files in Microsoft’s cloud.
  • Remix the new Photos app can now automatically create video slideshows from photo albums.
  • The update adds some handy browser updates, including the ability to pin websites to the task bar.
  •  OneDrive on-demand

Setting up OneDrive syncing on Windows has always been a hassle and somewhat confusing. With the new Files On-demand feature, though, those worries are may be a thing of the past. OneDrive now lets you see all of the files and folders in your OneDrive without having to manually synchronize them. They simply show up in Windows Explorer. When you need a file, you just have to double-click to download it. Sure, it could lead to some confusion if you work offline a lot, but for many always-connected users, it could end up saving some valuable hard-drive space. Just be sure to still perform regular backups. OneDrive is not a substitute for data backups.

Real 3D-Printing has Arrived

Real 3D-Printing has Arrived

Real 3D-Printing has Arrived

How it works

Traditional 3D printing requires a number of mechanical steps, repeated over and over again in a layer-by-layer approach. CLIP is a chemical process that carefully balances light and oxygen to eliminate the mechanical steps and the layers.

It works by projecting light through an oxygen-permeable window into a reservoir of UV curable resin. The build platform lifts continuously as the object is grown. The heart of the CLIP process is a special window that is transparent to light and permeable to oxygen, much like a contact lens. By controlling the oxygen flux through the window, CLIP creates a “dead zone” — a thin layer of uncured resin between the window and the object.

This makes it possible to grow without stopping. As a continuous sequence of UV images are projected, the object is drawn from the resin bath. Sophisticated software manages the entire process by controlling the variables

New “Talking” – SPYWARE and RANSOMWARE

A new strain of “talking” ransom-ware is beginning to appear. We’ve seen it on both Windows10 and Windows. In addition, apparently it being sold as service to hackers so practically anyone can use it. No coding experience is required. Ransom-ware is software which is dropped on a computer and runs through the network encrypting data files, rendering them un-openable without a “key” which the hackers attempt to sell to the victim so they can once again access their files.

The software verbally startles the victim and instructs them to pay the ransom.

NEVER pay a ransom, as there is no guarantee that they may easily become re-encrypted at a later date. In addition, there are remnants spread around the network which could reinfect.

Infected networks must be cleaned and secured. The best way to turn a would be catastrophe into a mere inconvenience is with  “proper systems backup and disaster preparation“.

While there are plenty of “backup” tools available. We always recommend the “3-1” rule. (3) three copies of up to date data, with one (1) copy off-site.

MALWARE ALERT! – Digitalprivacyalert.org pop-ups

This Digitalprivacyalert.org redirect is caused by adware installed on your computer. Such adware programs are bundled with other free software that you download off of the Internet. It also appears when visiting infected websites. Unfortunately, some free downloads do not adequately disclose that other software will also be installed and you may find that you have installed adware without your knowledge.

Once this malicious program is installed, whenever you will browse the Internet, an ad from Digitalprivacyalert.org will randomly pop-up.
These ads are aimed to promote the installation of additional questionable content including web browser toolbars, optimization utilities and other products, all so the adware publisher can generate pay-per-click revenue.

When infected with this adware program, other common symptoms include:

  • Advertising banners are injected with the web pages that you are visiting.
  • Random web page text is turned into hyperlinks.
  • Browser popups appear which recommend fake updates or other software.
  • Other unwanted adware programs might get installed without the user’s knowledge.

RECOMMENDATION DO NOT FOLLOW THE PROMPTS OR INSTALL THIS PROGRAM. RATHER CLICK the “X” in UPPER RIGHT CORNER. THEN RUN YOUR Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Program.

WannaCry Ransomware Global Attack

WannaCry Ransomware Global Attack

WannaCry Ransomware Global Attack is current attack on company data across the globe. Europe was hard hit last week and it is expected the US will suffer similar attacks. Be extra careful opening attachments and links on other websites. In some cases legitimate websites are being targeted to spread the offending code. For example a hospital I recommend “Right-Clicking” and scan the file or link before opening.
The worst issue that is being dealt with by victims is this: the files touched by the attack are encrypted and the attacker is the only source for the key to reverse that. This can have dire consequences, especially in the healthcare sector. Encrypted patient records, doctor’s files and other items may not be usable or accessible unless there is a good backup to restore.
The code encrypts all files and changes the file extensions of files to .dharma. It then crawls the LAN and in some cases through VPN and Offline mounts.

Tips to try and avoid infection are :

  • Keep operating system up-to-date and patched
  • Use latest version of your Anti-Virus available
  • Don’t open unwanted emails
  • Right-Click and “scan” all attachments – even those whom are normally trusted resources as they may have been affected without knowing so.
  • Dismount backup drives after backups complete as to isolate them from the Network.
  • Remount prior to scheduled backup
  • Have an Offsite Storage Plan like Carbonite or Code42
  • One Drive and Dropbox files will be affected and therefore are not viable backups if mounted.
  • Have a Virtual Machine  Disaster Recovery System in Place such as StorageCraft ShadowProtect.

If you should fall victim to this attack, we can help. Better yet if you do not have a “Disaster Recovery Plan” in place call us today to help get your systems protected.

Do NOT Pay the Ransom, there is no guarantee the files will be de-encrypted or will not just suddenly re-encrypted again in the future.

The best defense is planning , preparation and active monitoring.

Amazing NASA 4K Video | Thermonuclear Art – The Sun In Ultra-HD (4K)

Technology is accelerating at leaps and bounds. Here is one of my favorite videos made possible by the advent of NASA Space Exploration, Computer and High-def technologies. The sound track is cool, very congruent for background music to work and thought. Shot on RED, the amazing 4-8k camera systems

It’s always shining, always ablaze with light and energy that drive weather, biology and more. In addition to keeping life alive on Earth, the sun also sends out a constant flow of particles called the solar wind, and it occasionally erupts with giant clouds of solar material, called coronal mass ejections, or explosions of X-rays called solar flares. These events can rattle our space environment out to the very edges of our solar system. In space, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, keeps an eye on our nearest star 24/7. SDO captures images of the sun in 10 different wavelengths, each of which helps highlight a different temperature of solar material. In this video, we experience SDO images of the sun in unprecedented detail. Presented in ultra-high definition, the video presents the dance of the ultra-hot material on our life-giving star in extraordinary detail, offering an intimate view of the grand forces of the solar system.
